Turning Accurate Measurement of Real-Time Urine Output From Theory Into Practice

FIZE® Medical solved the technical challenges in measuring real time urine flow in an accurate, cost effective, digital format. In a head-to-head study, FIZE technology was more accurate with less variability in measuring patient urine output than the standard urinometer (click Rott et al Urine Output Measurement by a Novel Electronic Urinometer is much more Accurate than by Conventional Urinometer to download the published study). FIZE®’s methods are unlike any of its competitors, providing a unique platform to build a suite of assays upon this core technology advance.

Why the FIZE kUO™?

Current foley drainage systems and other new digital urine measuring devices rely on gravity drainage into a graduated cylinder attached to the drainage bag to monitor urine output.  This type of system is susceptible to errors due to changes in the position of the drainage bag relative to the patient.  Furthermore, the foley catheter’s position changes within the bladder itself, often leading to a significant delay between the time that urine produced in the kidney enters the bladder and when it exits the bladder via the catheter, at which time it is actually measured. The FIZE device eliminates all these sources of variability, thus more directly and accurately measuring the minute-to-minute kidney urine output (kUO).

In mathematical terms, the FIZE kUO™, device reduces the standard deviation of the minute-by-minute measurement of urine production exiting the bladder through the foley catheter, so that it more accurately reflects the actual urine produced by the kidney.

Thus, the FIZE kUO™, allows, for the first time, the measurement of “kUO”, a new parameter that will allow for more accurate prediction of real time kidney function and its contribution to the assessment of acute kidney injury (AKI) and real-time overall health status.

The Right Foley Catheter Solution for the COVID Pandemic

The COVID 19 pandemic has led to a realization of the need to prioritize technologies that increase protection of healthcare workers, while improving the care of critically ill patients, and providing enhanced efficiency. The FIZE kUO device addresses all of these goals by reducing the number of times a nurse/healthcare worker needs to enter the room of an infected patient by automating bladder management.

According to the UK’s Renal Association, over 25% of British patients suffering from COVID-19 who are on ventilators develop acute renal injury that would benefit from real time measurement of urine production to optimize management and reduce the risk of progression to kidney failure. 1. In addition to the advantages related to patient care and healthcare workers, the device reduces the workload of healthcare workers and allows hospitals to provide safer, more effective and efficient care.
